GREG SHIRLEY moves to #118 this week
on the Music Row Country Breakout Chart!

REVIEW - 5/13/2015

Hey, I apologize to constantly degrading the state of today's country music as pure crap. You and I both know it is but I don't have to keep ramming that point home in every comment about some cool Americana album I like. For the record, there is, indeed, some damn fine country music being made out there. Raised On The Run (Garage Door), by Greg Shirley, fits the bill. With an inviting voice, intelligent lyrics, a predisposition to rock every great once in awhile, and a production that accentuates the right moments, these 12 tracks constitute everything good about this particular genre (a genre that, like hip-hop, still has a whole boatload of garbage to wade through in order find its gems). And he thanks Jesus first in his liner note credits.
Shirley's a Texan who settled in Alabama with his dad upon the death of his mom. Moving to Nashville, he married, had children, worked as a brick mason and fiddled around with music at night. When his dad fell ill, he moved his family back to Alabama where he now owns a commercial masonry company while raising five kids with his wife of 20 years. Those nights with his guitar paid off.

NEW COUNTRY; GREG SHIRLEY'S
RAISED ON THE RUN

On his new album, Raised on the Run, country singer Greg Shirley specializes in songs from a rural point of view with a driving, rock energy. If you hated last week's ACM Awards show as much as I did (where'd the country music go?), you will find relief in this collection of authentic country music.

Raised On The Run (CD) By Greg Shirley

Review by David Bowling - Thursday, March 26, 2015

Greg Shirley grew up in a family that was constantly on the move in the southern United States. Little did the young boy realize that one day these experiences would become the basis for his first album release titled Raised On The Run. Shirley is an American country singer whose songs reflect his early life experiences. Songs such as "Honky Tonk Highway", "In A Pickup Truck", "The Good Drugs", "Jesus On The Dash" and Alabama Rain" are a testament to his hardscrabble life as a child.

CHATTANOOGA, TN - Chattanooga-based label Garage Door Records announces a March 17 release date for Raised on the Run, the debut album from country music singer Greg Shirley, and will also release his new single, "The Good Drugs," on February 17. Raised on the Run was produced by T.W. Cargile and Greg Shirley. The album's title reflects his upbringing during the Shirley family's long travels up and down the American southern highways. It was the soundtrack of the music on the car radio and in the beachfront towns all along the coastline from Texas to North Carolina that formed the basis of his musical influences. READ MORE HERE.

GREG SHIRLEY - RAISED ON THE RUN

He doesn't sound like Waylon but Shirley does a great job of capturing that redneck rock/outlaw sound and he fills it with heavy heart lyrics appropriate to the sound. Common clay/salt of the earth stuff that shows that just because Wal-Mart and urban sprawl are capturing the country side, it hasn't torn the heart out of it all no matter how hard it tries. Hard core and killer all the way. - Chris Spector

Greg Shirley
Raised on the Run
Garage Door Records

Singer/acoustic guitarist Shirley specializes in blue collar country songs with rock overtones, exemplified by easy going cuts like "Hard Road to Easy Street" and "Raised on the Run," occasionally popping with a tune that hits really close to home like the hard times that are chronicled in "Come On Man." Highlights include the fun driving song "Honky Tonk Highway," the funky, radio ready modern country of "In a Pickup Truck" and the amusing "The Good Drugs" where the lyrics surprise with talk of being drug to church, drug to the woodshed and more. Shirley is backed by a full band throughout.

Thats what I'm talking about! Way to go brother Greg! Congrats and well deserved.

My only son is 14. On January 6 of this year his father passed away. He was an alcoholic and then later got into drugs. Even though we had seperated I was always trying to save him. After his death I broke down one evening and begged my son never to get into things like that and he assured me he would never even try them. Yesterday morning he played your song to me and when it was over he said ... "if there's any kind of drug I'll ever try it would be all of these." You have no idea how much your talent can mean to people. I have played your song a million times since then and I have smiled a million more ... I just wanted to say thank you. God bless you and your family always.

Wow. I am 54 now. It's a funny age, Greg. One starts to figure out life eventually... And music. I just heard and saw your video 'The Good Drugs' and it passes the James Lawson test for song excellence. First...I fell in love with it halfway through, and secondly...it teared me up. I honestly believe this is the kind of material that separates the dreamers from the believers and can launch a career in the big time. Man, I am sure glad that local country boy Justin McCorkle turned me on to your stuff. This is the type of material that has vast commercial possibility...
